Geocache Description:

The Maryland Municipal League Geocache Trail
Celebrating Maryland’s Cities and Towns.
MML District 1

The printed MML Passport is no longer available. However, you may download a copy from the MML website here.

The trail consists of 11 MML Districts (regions).
The MML Geocache Trail project will launch January 1, 2009 with 78 participating cities & towns. A trackable geo coin will be given to the first 500 geocachers as an incentive for locating at least 2 municipal caches in each of the 11 districts. To be eligible for the coin, geocachers must pick up a Passport at any of the designated county visitor centers. Geocachers must use the stamp in the cache on their Passports and write down the cache code word listed in each cache. After at least 2 municipal caches in each district are discovered, geocachers may return to one of the county visitor centers and have their Passports validated to receive their collectable coin.
For a complete list of participating visitor centers visit the MML web site at http://www.mdmunicipal.org/mmlhome/index.cfm or MGS web site at www.mdgps.org.

WELCOME TO THE TOWN OF EAST NEW MARKET

A 1673 map of the region that is now Dorchester County shows an Indian village and fort near the present site of the town of East New Market. Colonization began with settlers arriving seeking religious freedom and economic gain. By 1790, the village of New Market appeared on maps; a post office was established in 1803; and the town was renamed East New Market in 1827. (The town first incorporated under the session laws of 1832, and a town commission was instituted, predating by many years the adoption of that form of small-town government by many other jurisdictions.)

East New Market was a focal point of activity during the American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. Now known for an unusually broad span of architectural styles primarily arising from the late 18th century through the early 20th century, the town's history spans a period from the pre-Columbian to the modern. East New Market also sits on what is believed to be an Indian path from the Choptank Indian "Fort," although most of the American Indian remains are thought to be lost. East New Market is also the hometown Thomas Holliday Hicks, who was sheriff of Dorchester County, Registrar of Wills of Dorchester County1850-1858, Governor of Maryland 1858-1862 and U.S. Senator 1862-1865.

In the latter half of the 19th century, a railroad line was built just east of East New Market increasing the importance of the town as an economic center for the surrounding region. Religious and educational institutions were well established by the early 19th century. The East New Market Academy was chartered in 1818, and the town gained a reputation as a center of learning.

By the 1930s, the town was over-shadowed by the nearby county seat and commercial growth slowed and the essence of the 19th century was preserved in fine examples of Colonial and post-Colonial architecture. East New Market is a National Historic District entered in the National Register of Historic Places in October 1975.

East New Market is proud of its past and confident of its future. Today, the town’s historic legacy is being carefully husbanded as a renaissance takes place. A new water and sewer system has been installed and annexation has expanded the corporate limits. New houses compatible with their historic setting are being constructed.

The Town of East New Market thanks you for visiting!
