Geocache Description:

Please note that the above co-ordinates are those of a random spot off the coast of Jersey and are not those of the cache.

To find the co-ordinates of this cache you will need to do some calculations using Imperial weights and measures and pre-decimal money, and also do a little simple algebra. I am sure that the cachers of Jersey are up to the job!

A certain farmer has three fields, viz. The Great Field, which is 2 furlongs long and 2 furlongs wide; Hailstone Field, which is 1 furlong long and 1 furlong and 1 chain wide; and Parson's Patch, which is 1 furlong 5 chains long and 6 chains wide. The farmer puts all these fields to the growing of wheat, the seed for which can be had for 2s 4d the stone. This is broadcast at ¼ oz the square rod. For ploughing, the farmer pays wages of 4d an acre; for sowing, 1½ d an acre; and for reaping, 2½ d an acre. Each acre yields half a hundredweight of wheat, which is sold for £7 3s 4d the ton. Wanted, the farmer's profit, expressed in pence. (Answer A.)

Another farmer, whose cost and yield per acre are the same as the first, makes a profit of £1 7s 6d. Wanted, the size of his holding in roods. (Answer B.)

A certain agricultural labourer works on the farm for 16 weeks, for six days a week. During this time he works as a ploughman, a sower and a reaper at the rates of pay given above. He ploughs 36 acres, sows 30 acres and reaps 30 acres. Wanted, his total pay, expressed in shillings. (Answer C.)

In his time working on the farm, the labourer drinks 2 kilderkins, 1 firkin and 3 gallons of small beer. He drinks only on those days he works. Wanted, his consumption of beer per day, expressed in pints. (Answer D.)

All the answers are whole numbers.

The co-ordinates of the cache are N 49° W.X' W002° Y.Z', where
W + Y = C,
W - Y = D,
X + Z = A and
Z - X = B.

You can check your answer at Geochecker.com.

The cache is beside a footpath. The footpath joins the nearest road to the cache at N 49° W.(X + 41)' W002° Y.(Z - 23)'.
