Geocache Description:

Spencer's first letterbox hybrid located near parking area for "Civil War Park". The park has two gates. Depending on the time of year and time of day - one, two or none of the gates will be open. If both gates are closed it is a short hike up the hill. If the bottom gate is open you can park right near the cache making it a park and grab.

The park where this letterbox hybrid is located is not really named, but I refer to it as the "Civil War Park" because it is a part of the Civil War Trails system throughout WV. There are earthworks, an old improved spring, ruins of the home of the former Spencer State Mental Hospital Superintendant and a neat cemetery...Oh, and also the Rebel Cache. Many people seem to approach the Rebel Cache from the wrong parking areas...this letterbox hybrid is located very close to the best parking area for the Civil War Park and the Rebel Cache. To get here follow the Civil War Trails signs/arrows from Rt. 33 and Williams Drive. There are interpretive signs about the Battle of Spencer on top of the hill.

Since there aren't many letterbox-hybrids in this region of the state nor many traditional letterboxes here is a brief explanation. A letterbox requires the finder to navigate to the container using written directions instead of GPS Coordinates. A geocache requires the use of GPS coordinates. The letterbox hybrid, as per Groundspeak guidelines, requires the use of GPS coordinates, but can still use written directions as a component. In addition, all letterboxes must contain a rubber stamp which MUST STAY IN THE LETTERBOX (or letterbox hybrid in this case). Seekers of letterboxes often carry a personal logbook that they stamp with letterbox stamps as a sort of passport to show the unique stamps from each letterbox. There is also a logbook inside the letterbox (or letterbox/hybrid) that you can log your visit or even stamp with your personal stamp.

This letterbox/hybrid contains a self inking custom made rubber stamp. (Note: I also have a traditional letterbox hidden in Spencer containing a hand carved rubber stamp. Traditional letterboxes are not listed on geocaching.com, but are listed on another site named atlasquest.com). Again, please leave the stamp in the container, it is not SWAG. I am a fly fisherman, hence the name and the style of stamp.

Now for the clue - at the posted coordinates go 94 feet (29 meters) at a 49 degree bearing to get to the cache. Hint - a compass is very handy here {and even more handy is the iGCT app on the iPhone}.

NOTE: Gate at bottom of hill closed from October 1 - April 1 each year.
