Hidden near the Delamar cemetery, this cache can be accessed via high clearance vehicles from a rocky road that leads down a canyon at the west end of the Delamar Ghost Town or a rocky road accessible from Cedar Wash via the power line road from US 93. It can also be accessed by ATV and perhaps high clearance vehicles from a road just north of the Helene Cemetery but use caution as this road is often impassable due to erosion from area rainstorms. I originally labeled the container as “Gold Strike Out” but felt the new name better fits the cache and its location. As with all desert caches, carry plenty of water and be on the lookout for snakes, pointy plants and sharp rocks (to name a few).
The following information is printed on a severely faded BLM sign posted near the cemetery entrance:
DELAMAR 1893-1909
This cemetery overlooks the ruins of the mining community of Delamar, where gold was first discovered in 1889. Between 1893 and 1909, $15 Million of gold was produced here. Delamar was the state’s leading gold producer of that decade. Many of the people buried in this cemetery died as a result of silicosis. The dry milling process used created a fine silicon or “Death Dust” which was inhaled into the miner’s lungs and gave the town its nickname of “The Widow Maker”.
Even so, Delamar boasted a population of over 1500 and had a hospital, newspaper, school, churches, saloons and an opera house. Enjoy but do not destroy your American heritage. Foot traffic is welcome but please leave only footprints and take only photographs.
State and Federal laws provide for penalties for defacing or removal of antiquities from public lands.
