THE RONNIE VANZANT MEMORIAL PARK
2760
Sandridge Road - Lake Asbury, FL
The Ronnie VanZant Memorial Park is a 90 acre
recreational facility located in Clay County, Florida just south of
Jacksonville off US 17 South before Green Cove Springs in Lake
Asbury, FL, and has been funded by the Freebird Foundation, Inc
from 1992-2001. Park Hours are from
sunrise to sunset every day.
This park
has been geared toward helping children become better athletes,
musicians and young adults. The tennis
and
basketball courts receive a lot of
use and have already been expanded. The softball field
also receives a
lot of use. Clay County completed construction of a five acre fully
stocked and landscaped fishing pond
with
handicapped parking. Covered Picnic Pavillions with grills and
public restrooms provide users with conveniences for family
outtings. The Foundation also developed a soccer field
and had plans
for 5 additional fields and organizing a soccer league for the
local kids. Future plans for the park included a teen center
complete with swimming pool, game rooms and a
gymnasium.
The Freebird
Foundation dedicated a brand new $50,000 play structure
for the park.
This top-of-the-line play structure, which offers slides, poles, a
bridge and many other features, was installed and officially opened
on December 14, 1996 at a Ribbon Cutting
Ceremony. In October 2000, it was dedicated in memory of Marion
"Sister" VanZant.
The most
recent addition to the Ronnie VanZant Memorial Park which was
completed in the Fall of 2000 is the creation of VanZant Trails, a
Nature Walk thru the wooded area and wetlands of the
park.
Unfortunately, many of Skynyrd's fans will not be able to come
to Florida and see the Ronnie VanZant Memorial Park.
All the
caches that I have placed in RVZ Park are named after songs that
were sung by the Southern Rock Band ~ Lynyrd
Skynyrd~
