American Idol began in June of 2002 and quickly became an icon of pop culture in the USA. The judges give critiques of the contestants from their performance, choice of songs and appearance. They are personalities all of themselves! Randy Jackson, a record producer frequently uses his pet phrase "Dawg". Paula Abdul, pop singer and choreographer, always has a kind word for the contestants. Simon Cowell, Brit music executive, is the most negative and frequently spars with Paula. New judge in '09 will be Kira DioGuardi, a singer songwriter. The show is hosted by Ryan Seacreast who often teases and jokes with the judges especially Simon. Latest update JAN 2010 :Paula is out and Ellen Degeneres is the new judge Jan 2011 - Ellen and Kira are out and Simon leaves. New judges are Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.
