The original, log building was erected in 1852 on a small parcel of land purchased for $5. Around 1856 a wood frame building replaced the log structure. At the end of 1870 the school grounds grew to more than three acres. Later, when the township needed a larger building, this school became the third located here. As a “second generation school,” an enrollment of about 50 was considered comfortable, but during the school year of 1923-24 there were more than 90 students in attendance. Whiteford Center School was in use until 1956, when the school system became consolidated.
As you can see, the building has been lovingly restored under private ownership.
You will find two numbers on the front of the school. To locate the cache, take the top number and add it to N 41 46.581, then take the bottom number and subtract it from W 083 42.785.
Because this is a historic site the cache is neither attached to the building nor within 5 feet of it. Please don’t hunt for it after dark. The neighbors would be justifiably concerned if they saw strange activity around this historic building at night. Permission for this cache was given by the owners.
