Wreckless Abandon Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

WestCoastNavigator: When this cache was placed 12 years ago, this park was a different place. Finding trails, summits, and artifacts was like a treasure hunt. The first time I entered here was with written instructions: At the end of the four lanes on the way to Sooke is a set of community mailboxes. Park here, walk back along the highway 6 telephone poles, look for a deertrail... There were few maps of this park at that time. If you were lucky you might find hand drawn trails on a topomap, or an old logging road map that someone found in the BC Archives. Most people found their way by sharing written instructions, or by trial and error. Finding these old relics, and then sharing them with the community was quite the adventure. With the advent of Open Cycle Maps, the official opening of the park, and the addition of a few hundred geocaches, it's easier to find your way around these hills. I'm happy that it's opened this area that I love for more people to discover, but sad that the new people miss out on the adventure of finding their way and discovering things along the way. Time has taken it's told on this cache as well, so it's time to retire it and make room for new adventures.

How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

This four stage multi is all about the things you find in unexpected places. The first three stages are micros followed by a regular lock ‘n’ lock at the final.

This cache is slowly loosing its battle with time. The truth of its appearance on the geocaching scene has long ago been forgotten. It made quite a stir. It was placed at time when there were scarcely a half dozen caches in the Sooke Hills. It was placed before open cycle maps reached this area. Maps were few, often hand drawn, and always incomplete. People found their way by guess and by gamble, often taking adventurous detours. The lucky ones might have written instructions passed around the hiking community like treasure maps. "Park at the Mailboxes where the four lanes become two again, count back along the road 6 hydro poles, look for a faint trail on your left." Caches were not placed every 161m along the trail, but at carefully chosen locations, an amazing view, an interesting relic of the past. Geocaching wasn't about the numbers, it was about the discoveries, the journey, and the people you shared it with.

An increase of traffic in the area has turned this cache's mysteries into common knowledge. And the objects at its various stages are turning to nothing more than bits of rust. Mother Nature does not like these objects, they don't belong in the woods, and she's doing a very good job of reclaiming what is hers. Still, the cache remains, and i hope you have as much of an adventure finding it as the first finders did.

FYI This cache covers a lot of ground. Some ground can be covered by car, some can not. This entire cache could be finished in one day, if you are fit, and have decent knowledge of the area. Remember, life is an adventure not a destination.
