Geocache Description:

remember this is a multi, but a good easy stop to get that blood going again. mostly flat. This is a Kool-Aid jar, so don't look too far.

Take some time to sit near the Cache and look out across the field. Imagine what this place was like back in the day, rumbling of engines, the drill sargents yelling, the coordinated Chaos of the military breaking new ground.

The WASPs (Women's Airforce Service Pilots) were an integral part of the WWII Airforce! In Feb 1943 the Training started in Sweetwater, Tx.
Eventhough the women were not allowed to fly in combat they had the crucial roll of ferrying aircraft from the factory to shipping points in the US. This enabled more male pilots to be sent into combat.

The program successfully trained women to fly every kind of mission short of combat. Of the 25,000 women who applied for this service only 1830 were officially accepted. 1074 finally got their silver wings and logged over 60 million miles of operational duty. From the list of women 98 paid the ultimate price while serving their country. Considered civilian employees during the war, the ladies finally gained military benefits in 1977 when special legislation passed.

I am not much of a writer but I hope you get the idea of why this spot is such a good place for a cache. There is a free museum nearby if you want more facts.
