This Cache is situated in Van Riebeeck Park at the top of
town.
Platteklip stream runs from Table Mountain into the city. It was in this stream that the slaves of early Cape Town used to wash clothes, later the Municipal Wash Houses opened here in 1888. The Wash Houses are used for Parks Board accommodation today and are just southeast of the cache. In 2001 an archeological survey turned up all kinds of washing artifacts in the park, such as buttons, shirt studs, an earring and a coin dated 1797. In fact as I placed the cache, I saw a guy washing his clothes in the stream. There was also a few clothing items scattered along the stream, so it seems the tradition of washing here continues, even today!
