Geocache Description:

A 3.0 mile circular walk around the villages of Kettlethorpe, Fenton and Laughterton.

This is a bonus multi-cache that requires answers to 6 questions gathered on the circular walk. It has been designed to be completed whilst also attempting 5 other caches, although the bonus cache can be done on its own.

The other 5 caches are Kettlethorpe Capers No.1 to No.5.

The above co-ordinates are for Car Parking outside of Kettlethorpe Church, NOT the cache location.

The walk is easy going (this is Lincolnshire so don't expect any big hills!) although it can get a bit muddy in places so it’s not really suitable for buggies or prams.

Kettlethorpe gained its place in history by being the home of Katherine Swynford, who later became the mistress of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, the third son of Edward III. Katherine's sister, Philippa, is believed to have been the wife of Geoffrey Chaucer. The story of Katherine Swynford was made famous by the publication of Anya Seton's novel "Katherine".
Katherine died on 10th May, 1403, and was buried on the south side of the Angel Choir in Lincoln Cathedral. The Swynford line continued at Kettlethorpe until the late 15th century. Only the gateway, some of the original stone wall of the manor tower, parts of the moat and cellar remain from this time.

The next owner of importance was Charles Hall, in the early 17th century. Charles's ownership lasted throughout the Civil War, when on the 26th July 1645 a skirmish took place at Kettlethorpe, at which (according to Roundhead accounts) the Royalists were routed, suffering four casualties and being chased to within three miles of Newark. Charles was returned to the Commonwealth Parliament in 1654. The brick walls surrounding the garden date from this period, and his arms feature on one of the gate pillars, which shows the initials CH.

In 1985 Kettlethorpe Hall passed back into the hands of a Parliamentarian, the Rt.Hon. Douglas Hogg, QC, MP, Viscount Hailsham. (And yes this is the place of the infamous Moat expense claim in 2009!). In the 1990's his wife was given the title of Baroness Hogg of Kettlethorpe in recognition of her work in Downing Street. It is a curious coincidence that the Hogg arms, like the Swynfords', consist of a shield bearing three boars' heads.

Unfortunately the Hall and grounds all lie on private land and cannot be viewed, the only part visible from the public footpath are the gate pillars mentioned earlier.

In order to work out the position of the final cache you will have to perform some simple maths - so if it's been a while since you have had to engage the old grey matter you may want to bring a calculator along! (Don't forget, most mobile phones and some GPS units have a calculator built in!)

Where :-

XXX = EEE - (C x AA) - DDD - 1
Y = C
ZZZ = FFF + DDD - BB + 1
