Josephine Saddle Multi-Cache

This cache was placed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of a sad day when a small group of Boy Scouts got stranded right here at Josephine Saddle and tragically lost their lives to a freak winter storm. There is a humble marker at the coordinates given above. The final can be found after examining the trail signs in the immediate vicinity of this marker.
There are four such trail signs:
I) approx. 27 paces bearing 220degrees (magnetic) from the marker
II) approx. 10 paces bearing 220degrees (magnetic) from the marker
III) less than 2 paces bearing 100degrees (magnetic) from the marker
IV) approx. 6 paces bearing 290degrees (magnetic) from the marker
The letters from these signs can be converted to numbers by use of this table:

No other letters will be used, so if you can't find a letter in this table you may have counted incorrectly.

q = the last letter on sign (I)
r = the fifth letter on sign (I)
s = the seventh letter on the bottom line of sign (I)
t = the seventh letter on the bottom line of sign (II)
u = the fourth letter of sign (II)
v = the last letter on sign (III)
w = the fifth letter on the bottom line of sign (III)
x = the first letter on the bottom line of sign (I)
y = the first letter on sign (III)
z = the fourth letter on sign (IV)
I couldn't think of any first finder prize that didn't seem irreverent upon reflection so the cache itself is currently devoid of trade items. If you can think of something appropriate to leave here by all means feel free to do so.
The final can be found along the paved road which leads into Madera Canyon. Parking is available within 1/10th of a mile of the final.
Finally, for reasons which can only be too obvious, please check the day's weather report before venturing up here. We don't want to lose anyone else on this trail.
