Geocache Description:

This cache was part of the original MML Geotrail.
Celebrating Maryland’s Cities and Towns.

The MML Geotrail and coin promotion has ended. Please look for another MML geocache project in the future.

The town of Oakland, nestled in the mountains of western Maryland, is one of the westernmost municipalities in the state. Oakland, the seat of county government, is in one of Maryland’s largest counties, with 656.8 square miles of natural beauty known as Garrett County. The 2,000 residents and the businesses believe that the town’s size is proof that good things come in small packages. It offers quaint shops, picturesque parks and historic sites of interest. Conveniently located only a short drive from the vacation centers of Deep Creek Lake and Wisp Mountain Ski Resort, Oakland is the perfect destination for a mini-getaway. Here you can stroll quiet streets and savor the charms of small town America at its best.

Oakland owes much of its early development to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, which came to the region in 1851, traveling for 30 miles through the southern end of Garrett County. During this period, a thriving commercial district began to develop adjacent to the railroad tracks near the B&O Depot. The fully restored depot on Liberty Street is the third to serve Oakland and was constructed in 1884. Designed by the prominent Baltimore firm of Baldwin and Pennington, the station is an elegant example of Queen Anne architecture. Thanks to an extensive restoration funded in large part by local initiatives, the Oakland Depot is once again one of the finest historic train stations in Maryland.

The coordinates above will take you to your first stop in Oakland. Using the date listed at this location as ABCD, calculate the coordinates for the last stage using this equation:
N 39 24.603 W 0D9 24.53C

You can take a nice walk through town to stage 2 or park within 50 feet. At stage 2 do not cross or go beyond the fence for the railroad tracks. Use great stealth in retrieving this cache! If you look around at ground zero people can spot you from all sorts of places.
