EAGLE WATCH UPDATE: The nest is GONE!!! :O I swung by to check on my cache and hoped to catch sight of an eagle, only to discover that the huge snag that held the huge nest is gone! Go figure! Now this is just another boring GRC micro. *SIGH*
Well, at least you get another Smiley and a stretch, and you can still enjoy the view of the old homestead! If it's been raining, you might be able to catch a view of the waterfall to the left end (NE) of the house. You might even be able to hear it. Happy traveling!
Interesting Version (before it disappeared!):
While we were setting up this cache location, one of 2 bald eagles that were in the area appeared and circled overhead a couple of times as if to say “Hello!” Now, that totally made our day!
A generation ago, the bald eagle, America’s national symbol, had nearly disappeared from our skies. From fewer than 500 nesting pairs, the eagle has now resurged to nearly 10,000 pairs. On June 28, 2007, the federal government announced that the American bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list. We were very excited to discover this spot just down the road from us!
The Bald Eagle is considered one of the biggest and most powerful birds in the world and by far, the most admired bird in North America. After watching them in flight, it’s easy to appreciate that the bald eagle was chosen to represent us as a nation by becoming a National Symbol. And, we can appreciate that our forefather’s didn’t follow the suggestion of Benjamin Franklin to go with the Turkey. There’s just something wrong about the idea of sitting down to a holiday dinner with our national symbol as the main course!
