Geocache Description:

The cache is located in Great Fryupdale (aka God’s Country) in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, near to one of Fryup Dales’ Millennium benches. Roadside parking near to cache site. Watch out for the rabbit trap - do not put your hands in it, the cache is not near the trap.

Great Fryupdale is considered one of the most beautiful dales in the North Yorkshire Moors and it is surprisingly quiet and unspoilt. There are plenty of rights of way in the dale and breathtaking views can be guaranteed. In its history Great Fryupdale has been a Jurassic sea populated by dinosaurs, an Ice Age lake, a Bronze Age swamp, a site of medieval mining and Victorian iron foundries. No one is quite sure from where the name ‘Fryupdale’ originates. One of the most popular theories is that the Norsemen named it after their favourite goddess, Freya. Also Fryup Dales were referred to in old records as the “forest of Fryca”; it was a favourite hunting ground for the Lords of the Manor. “Fryca” probably derives from the Norse name; became Frycoe then Fryop before Fryup. Fryup Dales’ residents erected two benches to mark the new millennium in 2000; one here on Bainley Bank and the other in Little Fryup at the start of the New Way. Both benches have fantastic views. Have a sit on this bench and take a look around you. Ahead of you is a conical hill, imaginatively named Round Hill, with the fantastically named Fairy Cross Plain at the base. Look right and in the distance on the moor top you can just see the newly restored Danby Beacon. To the left of you is the head of Great Fryup with its confusion of irregular shaped hills – the Hills of Fryup – formed by subsidences in centuries past. Sit here and you will realise why all my Fryup caches are named God’s Country.
