Geocache Description:

The coordinates take you to a New Hampshire Historical Marker. You will have to answer some questions about Mount Washington to find the cache.

Mt. Washington is the tallest peak East of the Mississippi and North of the Carolinas. It is best known for having the worst weather in America. The highest wind ever recorded by man, 231 mph, was measured on the summit. The upper part of the mountain has a climate similar to that of Northern Labrador and the alpine tundra zone supports many fascinating and rare plants. One of the Northeast's endemic bird species, the Bicknell Thrush, nests above 3000 feet. Over 100 people have lost their lives while attempting to climb this mountain. Snow and ice has been recorded in every month and the current record low temperature is -47 degrees! You won't have to climb the mountain to find this cache, but you will have to answer some questions about the mountain. Some answers are on the Historical Marker, the rest of the answers can be found on the Internet or at the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center.

A. Number of letters in the first name of the first white man to ascend the mountain.

B. The white man was guided by _ (number of letters in answer)

C. The number of days temperature has reached 80 degrees at the summit.

D. Third digit of the date of the first ascent.

E. The number of letters in the last name of the winner, in the fastest time ever, of the 1939 Inferno Ski Race from the summit to Pinkham Notch.

As you stand at the historical marker and look toward the summit three of the great ravines of the mountain are partially visible

F. The ravine on the left, partially hidden behind Lion's Head, is a mecca for Spring skiers. Subtract 2 from the number of letters in the name of this ravine.

G. The ravine on the right is a favorite winter ice climbing spot where challenging routes such as Pinnacle, Central, Diagonal and Damnation gulley can be found. Subtract three from the number of letters in this ravine's name.

H. The ravine in the center of the view is one of the least known of the major ravines. It can have dangerous winter avalanches although some winters it is skied by expert skiers. It also has a pretty water course down it's center. This ravine is called the ravine of _ _ (two words). Subtract 2 from the number of letters in the second word of the ravine's name.
