A short hike, less than a mile, up the Black Diamond trail from near Clayton.
We decided to put a cache up here while grabbing a couple caches that are on the same trail. Coal was discovered in this area in 1858 and there was soon five small mining towns where coal was produced, including Nortonville, Somersville and Stewartville. It didn't last long, all coal mining ceased soon after the turn of the century, they are all ghost towns now. Coal was used in the foundries, mills and shipping industry in the Bay Area. There was some sand mining after the coal mining ended, but now there is little left above ground to see. Now, what remains is a nice park(Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve) of over 6000 acres with a lot of hiking trails, and great picnicing and nature study. There are also some below ground places to visit, like the Visitor Center and a mine tour. Have a great time.
