There is an interesting legend is that Whetstone so called because soldiers sharpen their swords at the Whetstone before going onto the Battle of Barnet! Unfortunately it would appear that Whetstone is called Whetstone because it was a settlement on the West of Finchley and this name first appeared around 1398 many years before the battle of Barnet in 14 April 1471 so the legend is probably not true but you can see the sword marks in the stone! It is thought that the stone is the base of a medieval cross, which some used to sharpen blades). There is a genuine Medieval Building close to the Whetstone at 1264 High Road Whetstone the former site of the photographers Studio Cole. It is worth going inside to see the wattle and daub walls. Well done to rastan on the FTF!
