Stage 1
I am unable to find when the building was built. Please be aware
the building is now an adult bookstore. However don’t freak out
just read on and learn some interesting history.
1904 – Manufactured medical syrups. The original door to the
building now which are rwo large wooden doors was a stable entry
toget to the horses.
1907- Turned into the Texas Coffin Factory
1927-Oddly enough it turned into a candy factory 1930- The candy
factory closed and it became a storage facility. There was a fire in
the building during the 1940’s. (Unable to geta date on the
fire)The building was badly burned. I was told that during World
War 2 a large group of soldiers came down from the Base that is now
closed in Amarillo and helped the the owners clean up the fire
debris. After the building was cleaned up it would be used by the
Amarillo Moving and Transfer Company up until1965 to store
furniture and other items.
1965- New owner converted the building into a carnival ride
repairshop. 1978-A disco club was born. The Paramount Club was a
wild DISCOclub that thrived for almost 10 years. WHEN THE CLUB
OPENED THE NEWOWNER FOUND OUT THAT AN OLD BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN
AMARILLO CALLEDTHE PARAMOUNT THEATER WAS CLOSING DOWN AND
DISMANTLING THEIRSIGN.INSTEAD OF IT BEING THROWN AWAY HE BOUGHT THE
SIGN AND PUT ITON HIS NEW DISCO CLUB GIVING IT THE NAME PARAMOUNT
CLUB.IT WASFAMOUS FOR ITS HUGE JUKEBOX THAT THE DJ SAT IN. THE
JUKEBOX ISPROBLY 50 FEET TALL AND ON THE DANCEFLOOR.
1987- Disco died and the club was turned into a club called
TexasNights country club
1989- Turned into a adult bar named the Paramount Pleasure
Palace
1994-Turned into the adult book store you see now Now if you are
interested in more than just my pictures you may go inside the
building if you above the age Of 21 and have a ID and are not
squeamish from the whole adult bookstore theme. You can still see
the burned beams on the ceiling, the jukebox on the dance floor
(now an adult theater), and even the old disco ball still remains
along with all the original lighting used for the old discoclub.
However I am including photos so you guys wont have to go look
unless you just want to I guess.
Stage 2 From
1932-1977, the Paramount Theater, originally built for$250,000,
flourished in Amarillo. The Paramount was Amarillo'spremier
first-run theater for decades, but fell behind the multiplescreen
suburban complexes in the 1970s, and closed in the mid1970s.It had
plush red carpet, murals and a pipe organ, 1,433 seats, and was
considered the finest theater north of Dallas. It wasgutted and
converted to office space, but the pueblo deco exterioris still as
beautiful as ever. A hint of its grandeur can be seenin the second
level of the parking garage that fills the oldauditorium. The
painted starburst ceiling is still intact, as isgolden plasterwork
that framed the top of the stage. When the theater closed the sign
was sold to a local Disco inorder to advertise their name. Now
let’s fast forward to 2006. TheAmarillo Historical Preservation
Foundation put together a projectto restore downtown Amarillo. The
Paramount Theater was a key partof historical Amarillo. The inside
had changed but the outside wasstill the same, other than missing
the sign. The 33 1/2 feet tall and decorated with 847 light bulbs,
theParamount Theatre sign was removed from its original location
inthe 1970s and placed onto a disco club in the warehouse
district. In 2006, the sign was not only returned to its original
location at9th and Polk, it was completely restored. It cost almost
$80,000 torestore the sign because of rewiring and bulb problems.
All themoney was donated to the project by area banks
andorganizations.

Well hope you enjoyed the history and now every time you seethis
sign you will know of its historic trip.
