Geocache Description:

A short boardwalk to Bass River not only gives a great view of this tidal estuary but also grants a silent moment to reflect and thank all of our servicemen and servicewomen.

As a Navy veteran of Vietnam, I was particularly impressed with this Park.Three flags tower over Merrill Park in West Dennis in view from the Bass River Bridge: the American Flag, the US Marine Corp Flag and the POW/MIA flag. The commemorative plaque at the park memorializes Joseph Merrill, USMC, killed in action in Vietnam 40 years ago on December 1, 1968, and also honors all those who serve and did serve.
The striking black and white POW flag was originally designed on behalf of American POW/MIAs from the Vietnam War and has come to represent all of our missing countrymen and women from all wars. The POW/MIA flag's importance lies in the continued visibility of this symbol as a constant reminder of the plight of America's military missing. Other than "Old Glory," the POW/MIA flag is the only flag to fly over the White House, and has flown there on Recognition Day since 1982. It also flies over our nation's capitol on Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
