Yes, Georgia, there is a connection between Wallalah Mt. (along
Section 3 of the Benton MacKaye Trail) and the tiny population
center of Little Bitty Dial (pop. 200), located about 2 1/2 miles
away.
The mountain farm community of Dial, established in 1834, is
located in the Toccoa River Valley at some 2000 feet altitude. Dial
was the first area in Fannin County to be populated, and has
remained unchanged for almost 175 years. There are no stoplights,
no fast food restaurants, no gas stations, just a goat farm in
"downtown" Dial. (There is one store: historical Van Zandt's store
established in 1854 which carries convenience items, including
gas.) During the Civil War era, Dial was likely very similar to the
community portrayed in the movie "Cold Mountain," later on, Dial
was a moonshining center. What's the connection to Wallalah Mt.?
Being the oldest populated area in Fannin County, Dial is a
telephone hub: those of us who live on Wallalah Mt. and the
surrounding area, all share the 838 Dial telephone exchange/prefix.
Now that you know Dial's connection with Wallalah Mt. (it's a
stretch, I know, but I didn't put the Dial cache on top of
Wallalah), go find Little Bitty Dial cache on Wallalah Mt. by
continuing up Dial Road, turn right at GA 60 (Morganton Highway),
and go about a mile or so to the trailhead for the Benton MacKaye
Trail. For safety's sake during hunting season, recommend wearing
blaze orange at all geocaches in the Chattahoochee National
Forest.
The Wallalah Mt. - Little Bitty Dial Connection Cache contains
ancient sharks' teeth and sea shells from Venice Beach, FL (rain in
the Toccoa River Valley ultimately flows to the Gulf of Mexico via
the Toccoa, Ocoee, Tennessee and Mississippi Rivers), water bottle
carrier, carabiners, Susan Komen breast cancer research chip clips,
UGA playing card Ace of Spades, et al.
Small note: As required by the USFS for caches
hidden in the Chattahoochee National Forest the cache is
prominantly labeled as a geocache and the label includes the
GC1JCGV waypoint number and the owner's e-mail address.
Enjoy!
