Geocache Description:

An Rhuadh Darach is a waterfall on the River Lochy west of Tyndrum. It is one of a series of caches located at waterfalls, this time in the Western Highlands. These were inspired by my visits to waterfalls over the past 20 years, which were motivated by Louis Scott’s book The Waterfalls of Scotland, 1987. I have chosen waterfalls that are less well-known whilst still being worthwhile visiting for their differing qualities.

There is a parking spot, Strone Hill, off the A85 from Tyndrum to Oban, 3 miles before Dalmally. It has picnic areas laid out by the Forestry Commission nestled under old oaks and a viewpoint looking Westward to Argyll's highest mountain, Ben Cruachan. This is the starting point of two woodland walks signposted in red and green. The parking is the same as for Strone Hill GCXWFX. These waterfalls have been a hidden secret until a couple of years ago when the new trails were constructed to take you to a viewpoint above the largest fall; An Rhuadh Darach. The cache is placed overlooking another waterfall further upstream. The waterfalls are spectacular following rain or snowmelt To get to the cache follow the loop signposted to the waterfall and then follow the GPS for the last 100m. It is a very short walk in but the last 100m is off path in heather and above a steep sided gorge and makes up for the lack of distance to the cache. You want to turn off the track a short distance before the fence above the gorge and follow a faint path higher above the gorge. When you get within about 25m you will need drop down to the cache site. It is straightforward if you are used to this terrain but it is not for the faint hearted and I would NOT recommend it for children due to the dangers of falling. It can be very slippy especially in wet or damp conditions. It is for this reason that it has been graded a 4T. If you are not comfortable with the terrain it is easy to turn back though. You can still view the main waterfall of An Rhuadh Darach from a viewing platform from the main track. The cache spot was chosen because it has views of further waterfalls upstream from the main waterfall and is in a lovely gorge. Impressive in high water. If you combine this cache with Strone Hill and do the loop, the total walk would be just over the mile. ***Congratualtions yo Snagglepuss being FTF***
