This cache is located approx 8km up a
FSRoad at Jones Lake. From the cache location and many other spots
around the area you have a great view of the following peaks as
they look down on Jones (Wahleach) Lake, they are from south to
north, Foley Peak, Welch Peak, Stewart Peak, Baby Munday Peak,
Knight Peak, Lady Peak and just above the Trans Canada Highway the
famous Cheam Peak. (Lady and Cheam are not visible is this
picture)
Great views of this lake can be had
from the ridge between Cheam Peak and Lady Peak, so if you are
hiking up there be sure to walk over to the overlook and take a
peak down.
The cache has been named for the
highest peak in this range "Welch Peak" at approximately 7900ft,
however it is hard to determine which is the highest from the area
of the cache.
There are some great camping spots in
the area, provided by BC Hydro, these were free at one time,
however there now is a fee to camp here. The campground is closed
now for the winter, but access is still available to the two
smaller campgrounds and the day use area. So bring a picnic lunch
and plan to spend the day exploring around the area.

This area has a storied history of
mining activity, however I don't think anyone ever struck the
"Mother lode". There is still evidence of that activity along Jones
Creek and upon one of the local area mountains, which is a long
hike and involves some serious rock traversing. This area is best
known for it's power generation as the water from this reservoir
turns turbines at the generating plant along the Trans Canada
Highway.
The cache is an ammo can containing
some swag, a logbook and a couple of pens and a pencil
sharpener.
