This cache is hidden in short length of narrow woodland bordering Hall Lane, north east of Burtonwood village. It is known locally as Gypsy Wood although it is not named on OS maps.
Burtonwood village dates back to at least the Thirteenth Century. Near to the cache site is Bradlegh Old Hall with its moat and gatehouse (built in 1460). More recently the village was known for the RAF base, the largest airfield in Europe during the Second World War. Built in 1940, it remained in use until 1994. Burtonwood is also well known for its brewery which has been making beer here since 1876.
The cache consists of a 0.33 litre snap-lock box, large enough for small travel bugs and coins. Hall Lane is a narrow singletrack road and gated at each end so parking is not available next to the cache site. Ample parking is available at the Fiddle I'th Bag pub on Alder Lane (Post code WA5 4BJ) about 1/2 mile walk from the cache. The ale and food is good too!
