Geocache Description:

This cache is located in Hackett Hill Park in Hyde Park, NY. After discovering all the trails here while caching, I found an interesting natural feature that might be missed if going directly to the other caches, so I've placed one nearby so that others my find it and decide for themselves a story about this feature. The actual cache is placed a short distance to the east of the feature along the Gorilla Rock Trail (orange trail).

There are stories of this land being settled by free African Americans and fugitive slaves, but well before this, native residents worshiped a huge gorilla-like creature that they called "Kong." The people here disappeared much like the ancient Egyptians and little or nothing is known of their fate. The only evidence is the "Gorilla Rock" that stands a silent vigil over the lands.

Okay, so maybe it's just a cool rock. You make up a story. I'd love to read it.

The hike is a fairly easy one with well marked trails. Water can impede you at times, but not to where you can't make your way around it. Cache is kid friendly and pets are allowed on leashes. Park hours are sunrise to sunset and there is a nice map on the kiosk listed below. You're looking for a cammoflaged Loc-N-Loc container that is within 3 feet of the trail in a typical hide. Snow could hinder your ability to spot it, but you could still probably find it as long as it's not too deep.

At the beginning or end of your hike, please visit the Paul Tegtmeier Memorial. Paul Tegtmeier was a local fireman who died in the 9/11 attack. The memorial features a steel piece from the World Trade Center.
