V nedeli 17.prosince 1944 se odehrála nejvetší letecká bitva nad územím tehdejšího protektorátu Cechy a Morava. Ze základny 15. letecké armády USAF v severní Itálii vzlétlo 524 bombardéru k náletu na hornoslezské rafinerie v Blechhammeru a Odertalu.
Nad strední Moravou se svazy amerických bombardéru stretly s nemeckou stíhací eskadrou JG 300 „Wilde Sau“.
V prímých soubojích ztratilo nemecké letectvo 30 stíhacek Focke Wulf Fw190 a Messerschmitt Bf109 a Americané 10 bombardéru a 3 stíhacky P38 Lightning a P51 Mustang. Jedním ze zasažených stroju byl i americký letoun B24 Liberátor Nr. 42-78671-779. SQ.- 464. Sq. Po zásahu vybuchl a jeho trosky dopadly nedaleko osady Vrbovec. Osm clenu posádky vcetne kapitána letounu 1/Lt. Jamese T.Creekmora se zachránilo na padácích. Sgt.W.J. Hayes se zrítil mrtev na dvorek samoty Vrbovec a jeho kanadský druh Sgt.Frank Dansererau byl nalezen mrtev v obci Dluhonice.
Dalším bombardérem, který se po útoku peti stíhacu Focke Wulf – Fw190 zrítil nad Kokorami byl B24 Liberátor Nr. 42-51319-767 .Sq.-461 BG. Sedm z deseticlenné osádky padlo do nemeckého zajetí, 2nd/Lt. Frederick W.Hughes se až do konce války ukrýval v Brodku u Prerova. Dva letci však výbuch plne naloženého bombardéru neprežily. Byli to 2nd/Lt.W.C.Rundbacken a Sgt.J.A.Villars a jejich tela zavál vítr k samote Vrbovec.
Ve dnech 13.-15.9.2000 navštívili místa tehdejších boju prímí úcastníci bombardovací mise i jejich nemectí protivníci. Drívejší válecní neprátelé si po 55 letech podali ruce.
On Saturday 17 December 1944 the greatest air-battle above the area of Czech-Moravian protectorate took place 524 bombers flew up from the base of the 15th air-army USAF in the Northern Italy to the air-raid of the Upper-Silesian refinery in Blechhammer and Odertal.
Above the area of Middle-Moravia, the groups of the American bombers encountered the German fighter-aircraft JG300 „Wilde Sau“.
The German aircraft lost 30 fighter-planes, type Focke Wulf Fw190 and Messerschmitt Bf109 in direct fights above Moravia. The American aircraft lost 10 bombers B24 and 3 fighter-planes type P38 Lightning and P51 Mustang.
One the caught machines was olso the American plane B24 Liberator Nr. 42-78671-779. SQ.- 464. Sq. After the hit, it exploded and it is debris stroke the ground not far from the village Vrbovec. Eight members of the crew-inclusive captain of the plane 1/Lt. Jamese T.Creekmore – have saved their lives by parachute. Sgt.W.J. Hayes came down dead to a courtyard of a seclusion Vrbovec and his Canadien colleague Sgt.Frank Dansererau was found dead in the village Dluhonice.
The bomber B24 Liberator Nr. 42-51319-767 .Sq.-461 BG was the next bomber that crashed after aggression of 5 fighter-planes Focke-Wulf Fw190, near Kokory. Seven from ten members of the crew were taken prisoners by Germans, 2nd/Lt. Frederick W.Hughes was in hiding till the end of the war in Brodek near Prerov. Unfortunately, two pilots did not survive the explosion of a full charged plane. It was 2nd/Lt.W.C.Rundbacken and Sgt.J.A.Villars. Their bodies were blown by the wind to the suclusion Vrbovec.
In the days 13.-15.9.2000, the participants of the bomber mission and their German adversaries have visited the place of fights. Former war enemies have shaken their hands after 55 years.
