Geocache Description:

This Multi-Stage cache takes you through the beautiful and historic Franny Reese State Park in Highland, New York. The park is managed by Scenic Hudson. There are 3 Stages and a Final Stage. The 3 stages contain only coordinates to the next Stage and nothing else. The 4th Stage (Final) contains a log book and the usual goodies.

The coordinates above will take you to Stage 1- The Gravel Mine (camouflaged match stick container). From there you will receive coordinates to Stage 2- The Windmill (camouflaged bison tube/pill container that is hidden from plain sight). *It has come to my attention recently that this Stage has the chance of becoming frozen it its spot. Either do not visit this cache in below freezing temps or bring some needle nose pliers just in case* You will then proceed to Stage 3- The Brick House (camouflaged pill bottle). Finally, you will then head back north to find the Final Stage- Bridge View (Ammo can).
Some of the Stages of this Multi take you past some very old ruins and foundations. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU DO NOT GO INSIDE, TOUCH, OR GO NEAR ANY HISTORIC STRUCTURE. I have placed the Stages far enough away from the ruins to preserve their natural beauty but close enough so that you may still see and enjoy them. Please do not take anything from the grounds and leave everything as it was before you arrived. I also planned the routes to these Stages in such a way that it would be easy to follow along using the trails only. Bushwacking should be minimal if anything at all.
The BEST parking for this Multi-Stage cache would be at the first Trail Head on Macks Lane. Macks Lane is off of 9W right near Wingate at Ulster. Parking coordinates are added as a waypoint below. The Trail Head is clearly visible from your car (about 50 yards to the north). Please do not park in the road. Pull into the grassy area instead.
The other way into the park would be if you parked at the Johnson Iorio Memorial Park which is at the western end of the Mid Hudson Bridge. To get to this parking area just take Haviland Road from 9w (Northbound-first right off ramp) all the way to the end. The hike this way is considerably steep, but not that bad.

It is very important to place all of the containers back better than they were before. Please zip all of the Ziplocs and close container lids properly. Please check out my other cache, SERENITY NOW, that is located in the south east corner of the park overlooking the Hudson River. Also, don’t forget to visit GKman’s cache called, THE OLD ESTATE located in the center of the property. Some of the largest and most spectacular ruins/buildings are near this cache site.

I hope that you enjoy the hike!

From Scenic Hudson Website:
This "park-in-progess" features 250 acres of impressive ridgeline just south of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge.
The rugged landscape offers views of the Mid-Hudson Bridge and Hudson River as well as points along the river's east shore, such as the historic Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge and the Samuel F.B. Morse Historic Site, where Franny served as a board member. The land boasts a broad array of tree species and features carriage trails and stone walls that crisscross the acreage.
Franny was passionate about preserving every bit of riverfront land for the public. She cared dearly about the west shore, and this site is one of the area's most prominent parcels - its steep bluffs seen by thousands crossing the Mid-Hudson Bridge every day. The wooded ridgeline defines the view from Locust Grove and the Poughkeepsie shoreline. From the property, one can see south to the Hudson Highlands and north past the railroad bridge.
Other than this preserve, there is no significant public access to land along the river's west shore until the Newburgh waterfront - a full 20 miles away.
A trail leads to the property from the Town of Lloyd's Johnson-Iorio Park, located immediately north of the bridge's Ulster County side. The path takes visitors under the bridge and connects them to a carriage trail that accesses the site.
Scenic Hudson purchased the property in 2003 to protect it from development and preserve it as a public resource. New York State assumed ownership in 2006. The Franny Reese State Park will be managed for public use by Scenic Hudson and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission on behalf of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The purchase was made possible by funding from the Lila Acheson and DeWitt Wallace Hudson Valley Land Preservation Endowment.
