The
Pikes
Peak Ski Area opened in 1939 and operated for over 40 years as
a small, family-oriented establishment. Back in those days, they
didn't use fancy names for ski runs like Porcupine Tree or
Excelleration. Think Main Run, Beginners Run
and Racing Run.
In the 1980's, the owners
undertook a major expansion, adding a $700,000 triple
chairlift. The area closed in 1984 due to inability to make
tax and loan payments. Today, all that remains of the lift is
the concrete footings. The slopes can still be skied or
boarded in mid-winter although obviously there is no lift.
To access the cache, park at the Elk Park Viewpoint or hike from
Glen Cove Lodge. The cache is on the ground, but should be
accessible during most of the winter.
