TOWER GARDENS
Parking – there is a large free car park at the site – this does
have opening hours however – please look at gallery photo for
closing times.
The Gardens took their name from a water tower that formerly
stood here. Located within 1.5 km of Chelmsford's busy town centre,
it is part of three parks covering an area of approximately 30
hectares. Set in a mature landscape and adjoining the River Can the
setting is popular throughout the year.
The Conduit, a domed stone rotunda, was placed in 1852 on the
corner of High Street and Springfield Road. It stayed there for
almost 90 years until, being a traffic hazard, it was moved
unceremoniously in 1940 to Tower Gardens where it remains.
Today Tower Gardens accommodates a bowling green and formal
gardens, as well as tennis courts. It is one of five of
Chelmsford’s parks to receive the prestigious Green Flag award.
The cache is a large micro hidden in the area of the Recycled
Garden – created by children in September 2005 from recycled
materials.
