Fu fondata da Vespasiano Gonzaga alla fine del XVI secolo sulle sabbie del Po, in quella terra compresa tra il Grande Fiume e l'Oglio, lungo il tracciato di quella antica via Vitelliana che vide transitare e combattere tanti eserciti di Roma Imperiale. Per Vespasiano Gonzaga, inizialmente, Sabbioneta doveva essere prima di tutto una Fortezza e la potenza dei suoi bastioni a cuneo, le basse cortine sormontate da terrapieni, i bastioni esterni, oggi purtroppo poco leggibili, la rendevano sicuramente, a quei tempi, uno dei più muniti baluardi della Lombardia spagnola contro le mire espansionistiche dello Stato della Chiesa, della Serenissima e del, tutto sommato, inifido Ducato di Mantova.
Il periodo più prospero nella storia della città fu nei suoi primi anni, sotto Vespasiano I Gonzaga, di cui era la residenza. La cittadina, costruita in base ai principi rinascimentali della città ideale ospita diversi monumenti quali il Palazzo Ducale, il Teatro all'Antica progettato da Vincenzo Scamozzi, la Galleria degli Antichi o Corridor Grande, il Palazzo Giardino, le chiese dell' Assunta, Incoronata, del Carmine, la Sinagoga e lo storico ghetto ebraico, oggi non più abitato da una comunità, con le sue attività di stampa, fondate nel 1567 da Tobias Foa.
Nel territorio sono da segnalare la chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate nella frazione di Villa Pasquali progettata da Ferdinando Galli da Bibbiena e il piccolo Santuario della Madonna di Vigoreto sito in località omonima.
Secondo l'UNESCO Sabbioneta rappresenta un perfetto esempio di applicazione delle teorie rinascimentali su come vada progettata una città ideale .Purttoppo molte delle opere conservate nei palazzi che possiamo ammirare a Sabbioneta sono state trafugate, o incendiate agli inizi del 1800 dalle truppe napoleoniche.

Sabbioneta is a town in Lombardy, Italy, in the province of Mantua, about 30 km north of Parma, not far from the N. bank of the Po River, 19 m. above sea-level. As of 2007 Sabbioneta had an estimated population of 4,337. [1] It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2008.
Its period of prosperity and artistic patronage was under Vespasiano Gonzaga (d. 1591), who was its duke; by him it was transformed into a small Residenzstadt. It was well fortified and built, and from this period date the ducal palace (now the Municipio), the theatre designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi (1548-1616), and other buildings. The church and the summer palace contain frescoes by artists of the Campi family of Cremona. It was also during this period that it became a minor musical centre; composers such as Benedetto Pallavicino were employed here by Vespasiano, prior to his moving to the main Gonzaga city of Mantua.
The town is also known for its historic Jewish Ghetto and particularly for its Hebrew printing-press. In 1567 Tobias Foa set up the press; he had, however, published certain "anti-Christian books" and his career was "forcibly ended". His work and possibly his type were taken up by a Christian printer, Vicenzo Conte.
