Das Geotop "Ehemaliger Steinbruch im Pingartener Porphyr"
erschließt "Erzhäuser Arkose" ein zur Zeit des Rotliegenden
abgelagertes feldspatreiches Flutsediment,
das teilweise von kleinen Flussspat– und Schwerspat-Gängen durchzogen ist.
Dieses Gestein erhielt durch eine Verwechslung mit einem ähnlich aussehenden
vulkanischen Gestein fälschlicherweise den Namen Pingartener "Porphyr".
Der heute aufgelassene Steinbruch bei Pingarten ist bayernweit der einzige
größere Aufschluss in Rotliegend-Sedimenten und besitzt daher Seltenheitswert.
Logaufgabe:
- Mache ein Foto mit Dir und deinem GPS vor der Schautafel oder vor
dem Pingartener Porphyr

This geotope covers a part of the so called 'Erzhäuser Arkose'.
The rock got its name, because it was accidently held as the
similar volcanic stone named 'Pingartener Porphyr'.
The stone quarry filled with water today at Pingarten next to Bodenwöhr
is a rare sight because it is the only great outcrop of Rotliegend-sediments
in Bavaria.
Porphyry is a variety of igneous rock consisting of large-grained crystals,
such as feldspar or quartz, dispersed in a fine-grained feldspathic matrix or
groundmass. The larger crystals are called phenocrysts. In its non-geologic,
traditional use, the term "porphyry" refers to the purple-red form of this stone,
valued for its appearance.
The term "porphyry" is from Greek and means "purple". Purple was the color
of royalty, and the "Imperial Porphyry" was a deep brownish purple igneous
rock with large crystals of plagioclase. This rock was prized for various
monuments and building projects in Imperial Rome
