Geocache Description:

An easy cache in "Downtown Smyrna".

When Joe Chaney’s arm was accidentally shot off he buried his arm in this small cemetery in "Downtown Smyrna". Mr. Chaney would often visit the grave and place flowers on it. When Mr. Chaney died on May 14, 1954, the rest of his remains were buried at New Smyrna Cemetery, about one mile from his arm.

This cache is located in the "Smyrna Memorial Cemetery" which is now owned by the City of Smyrna and maintained by the Smyrna Historical and Genealogical Society. The society has a nice write-up about the cemetery here. A map of the cemetery drawn about 1985 is provided below.

Some cachers may avoid caches in cemeteries because they feel it's gloomy or they may not feel it's quite right to tread on the resting places of those who have departed. This cache is a little different.

First of all, the cache can be accessed from a paved Pathway of Honor that curves from the main entrance on the East side to the middle of the cemetery. Second, the location is of historical significance, and includes several markers that are placed there for the public to view.

This cache is place with the permission of Harold Smith, Director of the Smyrna Museum that is nearby across Atlanta Road. The Smyrna Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and is Free.

There is parking on the street immediately in front of the main entrance to the cemetery. Do notice that this is on a one-way street.

This is a small cache. Please bring your own pen.
