There are no residents living in Rice California. The area sprang up around a Santa Fe Railroad siding. The siding has changed hands and today belongs to the Arizona-California Railway running between Rice and Cadiz in California and Parker Arizona. The nearby airstrip belonged to the 4th Air Support Command in 1942 but operations ceased in August of 1944 and was declared as surplus in October of the same year. About four years later it started operations as Rice Airport as a civilian airport. A small flight school for missionaries was also operational at that time. In the early '50s the airport operated as a private field but by 1960, was completely abandoned. There are no buildings or structures still present. Today Rice is nothing more than a place people travel thru to get where they are going. There was one other time that Rice narrowly missed becoming a very well know location. In early 1943 personnel at Los Alamos began work on a new weapon. As the research continued on the design of this new weapon, a search also began for a location to test this weapon. Initially there were eight locations being considered; Tularosa Valley, the lava region south of Grants and Jornada del Muerto in New Mexico, San Nicholas Island off the California coast, on the sand bars off the southern coast of Texas, the San Luis Valley region in Southern Colorado and the Army's training area here at the airport. The list was narrowed down to two locations and Rice was still being considered. Then at 5:29 am MST on July 16, 1945 the world's first atomic bomb exploded over the New Mexico desert in the area known as the Jornada del Muerto - the journey of the dead man. What is here now is indeed an odity. This habit probably started when some yo-yo burned the shoe tree (GCC004) down the road. You are looking for a small container, log and pencil.
