While caching through Virginia and northwestern North Carolina, we saw a series that we really liked, silo caches. We enjoyed the series so much; we decided to place one of our own with a couple of twists. Silos are easy to find in rural areas but try finding one in the heart of a city. Most silo caches are micros or small, ours is a regular.
The cache is now a blue Folger's Coffee container with a gold lid. It started out as an ammo can but after losing 2 ammo cans, we replaced it with a clear plastic container. One of the ammo cans returned so we removed the clear plastic container and consolidated everything in the ammo can. Someone took the ammo can and left a white metal first aid kit box. The box worked for a while, then it was left open and everything got wet so we replaced the cache with a clear plastic container and all new swag. Now the cache is a blue Folger's Coffee container with a gold lid. The cache is located on one of the busier streets in Winston-Salem but there’s plenty of off-street parking on the other side of the road. Remember, the cache is a regular, easily visible from the right angle, so there’s no need to remove any rocks from the wall. As you approach the site, look across the meadow. There’s a barn and silo on top of the hill. Sometimes you can see cows. While the container is not quite wheelchair accessible, cachers with mobility issues should have little difficulty getting to the site. There's lots of poison ivy here. Whenever we do maintenance, we bring a beach towel to lay over the PI.
