Geocache Description:

Small canister on top of Roseberry Topping.

Roseberry Topping is the standout feature of the local countryside at 1094 feet (320m) high.

Travelling round the local area it still surprises me where you can see it from. This led to an idea of a Roseberry view series, where, dependant on the Teesside weather, you should be able to see

This cache is located on top of Roseberry Topping itself and will normally need stealth to avoid muggles.

In October 2009 a special event took place where the entire hill was illuminated with a mixture of lighting and pyrotechnics as a celebration of the historical and cultural importance of Roseberry Topping - www.odinsglow.co.uk

Car parking is at the bottom of the hill, then follow the well defined paths to the top. A number of them have steps built into them. It can be wet and slippy underfoot so needs appropriate footwear and quite steep in places.

The hill was held in special regard by the Vikings who settled in Cleveland in large numbers during the early medieval period and gave the area many of its place names. They gave Roseberry Topping its present name, which is one of only a handful of known pagan names in England. "Roseberry" came from Old Norse Óðins bjarg ("Odin's rock or crag"), after the Norse god Odin. The name changed successively to Othensberg, Ohenseberg, Ounsberry and Ouesberry before finally settling on Roseberry. "Topping" is a corruption of
toppen, an Old Norse word for a hill.

Odin was the Norse god of wisdow, poetry, war, agriculture and the dead, quite a varied portfolio !!!

The shape of this hill is created by a geological fault and a collapse thought to be due to the local mining. The views from the top (on a clear day) are excellent and keep an eye out for the local morland birds.

Roseberry Topping itself is National Trust property and thanks to their kind permission i can finally put a cache where i have always wanted one to be, though they did comment on how busy it could be and how long it may stay, so stealth is the word.
