Geocache Description:

The Gold Rush

On January 10th there's a lot of caching going on in these parts. Some folk are getting up at in the early hours to climb Winter Hill , some are gathering at a more sociable hour at the infamous Bolton West Services to bid them farewell before they get bulldozed. Some are doing both and some (who have more sense!) are doing neither. Whatever category you fall into you are welcome to join the after cache gathering in my local the Ridgway Arms.

If you are attending the services event then its worth noting that the Ridgway is walkable from there. (This does NOT involve walking on the motorway!). Its also worth pointing out that this pub is next door to a railway station so for various reasons (e.g. Carbon Emissions/Desire to Drink Beer) you can leave your car at home if you wish.

In Case You Were Wondering

I always assumed that the Ridgway Arms takes its name from the narrow hill adjacent to it which has my home village of Blackrod on it. However it seems I was mistaken. I have recently discovered that the pub is named after the Ridgway Brothers who in the 19th century ran Wallsuchs Bleachworks and were generous benefactors of Horwich and Blackrod.
