A walk of approx 1.75 km, which follows the Oldbury
Power Station ‘Dunlin’ Nature Trail. Collect information along the
way to work out final co-ordinates for the cache which is a small
clip lock box in camo bag placed outside the grounds of the power
station.
The above co-ordinates are for the visitor’s car park at Oldbury Power Station. On arrival make your way to the NNW corner where you will find the beginning of the nature trail. Replace all letters with number answers which you will find as you walk around the trail.
*********SADLY OVER THE COURSE OF TIME THE INFORMATION BOARDS, WHICH WE USED FOR YOU TO FIND ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS FOR THE CLUES, HAVE FADED BEYOND READABILITY. THE POWER STATION IS NO LONGER GENERATING SO THEY MAY NOT GET REPLACED BUT AS THE WALK IN ITS OWN RIGHT IS WORTHY OF BEING DONE WE DID NOT WANT TO ARCHIVE THIS CACHE. WE HAVE FOUND ALTERNATIVE QUESTIONS FOR YOU TO ANSWER BUT WHICH ULTIMATELY BRINGS YOU TO THE SAME NUMBERS AS WAS PREVIOUSLY REQUIRED **********
Proceed along the wide tarmac path and look out for an ‘Orchard’ information board set back in an opening in the hedge on your right.
CLUE 1 – How many varieties of cider apples does the orchard contain? The answer is also the same as the last of the four numbers on the gate post. ( A )
Continue to the end of the tarmac path, turn left and proceed to next information board
CLUE 2 – Near the ‘Pond’ board how many Life Buoy's can you see? ( B )
How many wooden legs (minus one) hold up the faded information board ( C )
Now follow the trail skirting the pond. At the end of the gravel path follow track up the embankment to the right where you meet a wider gravel track. Turn left and continue along this path to a T-junction, go left to and through the kissing gate. You are now on the ‘Severn Way’ footpath and should be able to see the two Severn bridges and the top of the Wye bridge.
CLUE 3 – On the 'DANGER' notice how many sides are there on the symbol showing a swimmer in danger? ( D )
Turn left and follow the perimeter of the fence stopping to collect the following clues
CLUE 4 – All along the fence on the left are keep out signs, from these collect the following information which then gives you a date when the Power Station first started producing electricity.
Number of letters in the 6th word on the 4th row ( E )
Number of letters in the 4th word on the 2nd row ( F )
Number of letters in the last word on the top row ( G )
Number of letters in the last word on the bottom row ( H )
CLUE 5 – How many bird pictures are there on the ‘Bird Identification’ board? Or use the total number of letters in the 3 black words under the word 'WARNING' on the sign attached to the blue gates where a road crosses the path from the Power Station. ( J K )
CLUE 6 – On the OLDBURY WALKING ROUTES sign you are looking to make up another date of when they excavated the nearby Lagoon.
How many butterflies are behind the word 'Oldbury Nature Trail'? ( L )
How many miles would you walk if you walked the 'Oldbury Nature Trail' 6 times? ( M )
Multiply the number of visible screw heads on the board by 3 ( N )
How many actual Lagoons can you see on the map ( P )
Now retrace your steps for a few yards and turn down the slope away from the waters edge. At the bottom of the slope turn right onto a grass track.
CLUE 7 – From the ‘Hedgerow’ board, note how many kilometres the complete ‘Dunlin’ trail is. ( R )
You can now use your answers to work out the final co-ordinates for the cache.
N51° D (RxA). (F-C) H (A+B+D). W002° (L+P) A. K (M-G) J.
You should be directed on through the hedgerow path.
Please do not detour off the trail whilst within the boundaries of the power station and take care with children and dogs due to close proximity to water and steep slopes leading down to the banks of the River Severn. You could return to the car park after finding the cache by going through the brown kissing gate on the right before the car park and follow the trail through the meadow and orchard. We hope you enjoy the walk and views. Could be muddy in places after rain. Binoculars may be useful.
Congratulations spuds4t FTF, hope your fingers thawed out ok.
