INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #668

"Centerton Cemetery"

This quest will bring you to the Centerton cemetery in ClayTownship of Morgan County. This was the location of an early ISQ cache that has been archived for quite a while and this cemtery certainly needs a cache. There are veterans here from at least 6 wars, and I suspect there is a Vietnam veteran here somewhere, which would make it 7 wars. There are numerous Civil War and WW I veterans buried here, as well as two Spanish-American War veterans. According to cemetery records there is also a Confederate veteran here, although I did not locate that headstone on the cold blustery winter day I visited the cemetery.

Mexican-American War Veteran

Lemont Morgan was from Johnson County and was a member of Company C of the 3rd Indiana Infantry Regiment. Company C was known as the Johnson Company as most members were recruited from Johnson County. He served from June 1846 until June 1847. The 2nd and 3rd Indiana were participants in the decisive Battle of Beuna Vista.

Civil War Veteran

Missouri was interesting in that it provided units to both the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War. The 11th Missouri Cavalry was a Union regiment. They spent most of the war patroling in Arkansas. The regiment lost 30 men to combat and 186 to disease.

Spanish-American War Veteran

Burton Parker was a member of the US 4th Infantry. This was a regular US Army unit and not an Indiana volunteer regiment. The 4th was transported by boat from Tampa to Cuba where it took part in the Battle of El Craney. In this battle 500 Spanish troops held off 8000 American troops for 12 hours, preventing them from reaching San Juan Hill. Eventually, the US troops prevailed and the 4th participated in the occupation of Santiago.

World War 1 Veteran

Lee Collins was a member of the 10th Machine Gun Battalion in the 4th Infantry Division. The 4th participated in all the major battles in France and suffered a 50% casualty rate. 10 officers and 34 enlisted men were awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
