Geocache Description:

Congrats to MXCR for FTF!

Park at the Byron Herbert Reese trail head.

This Cache is placed in memory of Meredeth Emerson. Meredith was a beautiful young lady who went missing on January 1, 2008 while hiking with "Ella" her black lab on Blood Mountain in Blairsville, Georgia. A massive search and rescue operation immediately began during which thousands of people (Including GentJack) from across the country contributed time, money, and energy to help find her. Meredith’s story gained national media attention. Sadly she was found murdered on January 7, 2008. Meredith and her dog Ella may have hiked this trail a year before this cache was placed.
The cache contains a Nice FTF coin, some doggie toys and the usual cool swag. Also a new travelbug "Ella" the Black Lab will be there for a fair trade.

Best to start at the parking area at Byron Herbert Reese Trail Head and hike 7/10 mile to the Appalachian Trail at Flatrock Gap. There are some cool Rock Formations there (just to the left) to visit along the way.
At the intersection of the trails you will see a blue blazed trail. This is Freeman Trail. Take Freeman Trail to the Cache but don't stop there! Continue on to Bird Gap and make a right onto the AT and go up to Blood Mountain Summit. You can then continue on down Blood Mountain via the AT and back to Flatrock Gap where you will turn back (left) onto the Byron Herbert Reese Trail and back to your car. If you do the loop I have described, it is about 6.5 miles total and you will need water and food and about 4+ hrs to complete so watch your daylight.
FYI there are 3 other geocaches you can snag if you do the loop: Blood Mountain, From Jarrard to Horsebone and my other cache Slaughter Ambush.
On a clear day in the fall and winter you should have a very nice view from the cache site.
Please practice CITO

Small note: As required by the USFS for caches hidden in the Chattahoochee National Forest the cache is prominantly labeled as a geocache and the label includes the Geocache ID, waypoint number and the owner's e-mail address. Enjoy!
