Geocache Description:

Another cache and dash in the East Neuk mining series.
When set, the GPS signal was not good and the co-ords were changing. I will check in the next two or three days and amend if required. Done, see log.

Coal was worked from a mine known as Annie's Mine (opening date probably early 1908), and from a nearby shaft in which the seam was at a depth of around 27 ft. Part of the coal seam between this point and Falside farm is no more than 8 ft below the surface. Little seems to be known about this mine, other than the name and the fact that it existed – only 100 years ago. I wonder who Annie was…..

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, there were numerous attempts to explore and open up new coal mines in East Fife. In Pittenweem in the 1890s, for example, the depressed state of both fishing and agriculture led to a campaign to develop an alternative industry in coal.

The actual site of the mine was between the cache and Falside Farm. Again absolutely nothing remains on the surface to show that it ever happened.

The cache is like a big 35mm film container (about 95mm x 45mm) and contains notelet and pencils only. There would be room for some very small swaps.

Parking is available very close to the cache. There is a length of barbed wire in the grass quite close to the cache site. It should not cause any problems, but do be aware that it is there.
There is a walk through the small wooded area which is rather pleasant.
