Geocache Description:

An easy cache in a beautiful hollow…

Hollow – (noun) “HA-low” - A valley-like area between two mountains or hills, often with a corresponding stream running through it. (From Middle English 'holw' or 'holh', from Old English 'holh' for hole or hollow. Pre-12th century.)

While doing trail maintenance, I often stop in this hollow for a rest. With the sun shining in from the southwest, it is such a warm and beautiful place that it makes me want to lay down and take a nap! So I had to put a cache here to share the beauty. I averaged 5 readings from 3 different days to get the coords, but satellite coverage is iffy down in this valley-in-a-valley. So be prepared to look around a bit…

The cache is a regular-sized container that looks suspiciously like a plastic coffee can, painted in camo colors. The cache is within 30 feet of the trail, but no bushwhacking is needed. The cache includes a logbook, pencils, first-to-find pin, and lots of really good swag, including a laser pointer, a pretty scrunchie, a cell phone case, epoxy glue (better than duct tape!), and a cell phone ear piece. So bring a trade item, or drop off a TB.

If you’ve already finished the other caches along Whitely Farms Trail, you can take the shortcut down ‘Deer Alley’. From the parking area, head straight across the field, past “Don’t Fence Me In,” to N 39 43.539 W 75 44.885. From there, you can easily figure out the rest of the way. Minimal bushwhacking might be needed here during the summer. This shortcut reduces your hike by 0.5 miles in each direction.

This cache has been reviewed and approved by Nick McFadden, White Clay Creek Park Superintendent. A map of the trails is saved in the picture gallery. There are several other caches along the western loop of the Whitely Farms Trail, a 2-mile round-trip hike, so why not make an afternoon out of it!

This is a fee area, open from 8 AM to Sunset. Please support your state parks by purchasing an annual pass. If you like what you see, consider joining the Friends of White Clay Creek Park, where you can volunteer for over 20 different projects, including trail work, teaching, bird box monitoring, acting (yes – theater! Just ask Mike Ott…), construction work, historical research and gardening. Check it out at www.whiteclayfriends.org.

No hunting is allowed on the side of the road where the parking area is located, nor anywhere along the Whitely Farms Trail. Hunting is allowed across the road from the parking area, past the white house and barn, so use caution if you feel like wandering that way.

Of course, please rehide the cache where you found it – don’t make this easier for the next guy.
