Geocache Description:

Wander along some of the trails that criss-cross this pleasant piece of bushland tucked away in Carlingford.

This cache is located in Hunts Creek Reserve, which is home to one of the creeks that feed Lake Parramatta (the geocache was originally to be named Parramatta's Source).

Hunts Creek flows though a sandstone gully that formed during the triassic period (220 million years ago). It is surrounded by several species of eucalypt, including endangered turpentine ironbarks (Syncarpia glomulifera).

One of the paths through Hunts Creek Reserve

The region was originally home to the Dharug people for more than forty thousand years before British settlement in 1788.

Soon after Parramatta was settled in November 1788, water was drawn from the lake downstream.

By the 1920s, Lake Parramatta was turned into a recreational swimming area. But by the 1980's, the water quality had declined and it was decided that the lake should no longer be open for swimming.

After several years of rehabilitation the water that flows in the creeks that feed into Lake Parramatta have recovered substantially and swimming is again allowed in the lake.

Unfortunately, years of neglect, misuse and urban encroachment has meant maybe species have left or disappeared - such as the suberb blue wren and eastern whip bird and sugar glider.

Finding the geocache

To find this geocache, you must visit four waypoints within the reserve and locate a disc magnet at each location. The disc magnets are attached to metal sign posts adjacent to the paths.

Each disc magnet has a 2-digit number printed on it. These numbers will help you find the location of the geocache's resting place, which is S33° 4_._ _ _ E151° 0_._ _ _.

For example, if you found 54, 98, 01 and 23, the geocache may be hidden at S33 45.498 E151 02.301.

The geocache is hidden in the reserve, so it should be easy for you to determine the order that the two digit numbers appear in the answer.

It is recommended you begin at Waypoint 1 and travel in a clockwise direction however you can visit the waypoints in any order.
