A cache placed on the 40th anniversary of the death of John Steinbeck.
John Steinbeck grew up across the street at 132 Central Avenue. This beautiful Victorian was built in 1897 and sold to John Ernst and Olive Hamilton Steinbeck at the turn of the century. John was born on February 27, 1902, in what is now the reception room. He remained a resident of the house until he left for Stanford at the age of 17.
John wrote his first short stories and his novels, The Red Pony and Tortilla Flat, from behind the upstairs front window.
The house has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
12/27/09: The key holder has gone missing. It was never really a good fit for the spot. Replacement is a camo'd nano which will increase the difficulty, but perhaps have a longer lifespan... fingers crossed. Please bring your own pen to sign the log.
