Geocache Description:

Come for a wander to Civic Park to grab this one. This is a nano micro and it is a log only cache. If you’re not aware, you can use the base to extract the log. Please make sure the log is replaced into the lid and place container where it was found.

Until the 1930’s this Ruston Proctor steam engine was used for channel irrigation by Chinese market gardeners – each one known locally as Charlie the Chinaman. The gardens existed on the area of Civic Park (formally known as Macquarie Park) and the crops were sold at the local markets and by hawking from a horse and cart.

In the early years in Australia, Gibson Battle & Co of Sydney were the sole traders for Ruston Proctor steam engines. They traded extensively in the Hunter Valley. The firm operates today at Rydalmere, Sydney.

Charlie’s engine has withstood the scrap merchants, the floods and weather. It was unearthed in 1986.

The engine has been restored by students and staff of the Singleton Technical College as a Bicentennial Project.

Come for a wander to Civic Park to grab this one. On an old steam engine. Yep, the geolids can climb to their hearts content. To be quite honest, I’ve lived in the area for some time now and didn’t know this was here. There are tables, loo’s, a play gym and plenty of room to let the geolids and pooch’s run around.

Now that the container has been replaced, you will need something thin to retrieve the log from the container i.e. needle or tweezers.

Happy caching :)
