Geocache Description:

This is a Team Harpo hidden treasure. This cache is located in Lima, Ohio. The cache is available all day and night. Since we live in New York, we have made arrangements with a local Geocacher (easyrn1) to look after the cache in our absence.

Close to this spot a number of manufacturing plants produced products that were used by commercial enterprises and the US Military. Westinghouse was situated across from the nearby parking area and is now home to the Allen County Department of Job and Family Services. Westinghouse was a defense contractor for the US military producing electrical systems for military and commercial aircraft, NASA’s space shuttle program and the Abrams battle tanks, also locating their Small Motor Division in Lima. Also nearby was the home of the Lima Locomotive Works where numerous steam driven railroad locomotives were built. Beginning in the 1870s and eventually closing in the 1950s after Lima's last steam locomotive the Nickel Plate No. 779, a 2-8-4 "Berkshire", left the erecting halls in 1949. The company merged and changed names over the years and under the last name, BLH, the factory produced diesel engines for a short time but closed in 1956.

Located a short distance from here is the home of the Lima Army Tank Plant (LATP) which manufactures the M-1 Abrams tank. The Tank Plant is a government-owned, contractor-operated (GOCO) facility, run presently by General Dynamics. The plant has manufactured over 7000 tanks since production began in the early 1980s. The Lima Refining Company is also nearby and it has a capacity to refine light sweet crude oil into gasoline and diesel at a rate of 165,000 barrels per day. Oil was discovered in the area around 1885, bringing John D Rockefeller’s Standard Oil to Lima and for nearly a decade, the oil field was the largest in the nation. An Ohio Steel Foundry was also located near this spot and was a reason the Army selected Lima for its manufacturing plant. At one point there were also 5 major railways that crossed through Lima which connected it to major supplies for the items manufactured here.

The cache is a small lock and lock with a log and assorted items for trading. Good hunting.
