Eckley Cemetery sits back a half-mile lane off C.R. 1754 (Landfill
Road) less than a half mile east of C.R. 655, Vermillion Twp., Ashland
County, OH. It is the burial ground of a Revolutionary War veteran and
Civil War veterans. The cemetery was laid out by George Eckley in 1816 after
he built a small church building, which was known as Eckley's Meeting
House. Eckley is credited with establishing the first settlement in the
county in 1811, near the two Indian villages of Jerometown and
Greentown. The community revolved around the church and school built on
either side of the cemetery and was known as Eckley community for more
than 100 years. The cemetery is all that remains, as the church was
struck by lightning and burned to the ground in the 1880s and the school
was torn down about the time of WWII.
