Geocache Description:


This is the ninth cache in this series of Charlotte, NC Neighborhoods.

Grier heights was originally called "The Quarter" by its residents. At the turn of the century (19th to 20th) almost everyone owned their own home. The men were artisans and craftsmen and many of the women worked as domestics in the big houses of nearby neighborhoods such as Eastover
and Myers Park. The intersection of Skyland Avenue, Drenan Street, and Leroy Street was known as "The Block" and was a religious, commercial, and social center. There was a cafe, a grocery store, and a meeting hall here, and the Billingsville Rosenwald School was built just down Leroy Street in 1927.

Today Grier Heights is a mixture of old and new. There are many unoccupied houses, some scheduled (or should be scheduled) for demolition along with newer apartment complexes. Many county service buildings are located close to Randolph road. We would not suggest making this a
night time cache quest; we purposely made this an easy find so you can grab and go.

You will need your own pen or pencil. Please make sure the bag containing the log is sealed when you finish as this is not a weatherproof container.
