Introduction
The second of our Florence Nightingale Series - Florence and the
Nightingale family had their summer home at Lea Hurst in Holloway.
This cachel has extensive views over the Amber Valley, Lea,
Cromford and Bole Hill.
Access
Vehicles can be parked alongside the cache site which is accessed
through a wooden "kissing gate". The cache is hidden under some
rocks on the bank above the memorial.
As the site is popular and busy be careful that you are not
observed and make sure the cache is well hidden when you are
finished.
A little history
Down in the valley you can see the Smedley clothing Factory at "Lea
Mills" which was built by Peter Nightingale as a cotton mill and
subsequently taken over by the Smedley family 1803 when he died. In
the same area is Lea Wharf on the "Nightingale Arm" of the Cromford
Canal - built by Peter to service firstly his lead mining industry
and then later the mill. Alongside the wharf, although now long
since gone, was the Nightingale Hat Factory.
During certain weekends of the year you can also see smoke from the
Lea Wood Pump House which was build to pump water from the River
Derwent into the canal.
The Deer
Across the lane from the cache is a field surrounded by a chain
link fence which contains a herd of deer ( hence the cache name ).
These are best viewed from the gateway a short walk up the lane -
great for the kids. Note that the deer are sometimes at the far end
of the field and may not visible.
Now its time for some tea!
Further down the lane ( towards Lea ) are Lea Rhododendron gardens
which are open Mid March until late June. There is an entrance fee
to the gardens but the tea shop outside sells delicious cakes and
has a good view over the gardens. In Lea there is the Jug &
Glass pub at the end of a line of cottages built by Peter
Nightingale - look out for the initials PN and dates above the
doorways.
