Geocache Description:

Part of a series of 11 caches on a walk of about 6.5 miles, starting and finishing in Stow on the Wold, the highest town above sea level in the Cotswolds.

The earliest recorded reference to Broadwell is in a charter dated 708 AD ,whereby Coenrad king of Mercia granted the manor and its appurtenances to the Abbey of Evesham. As its name implies Broadwell was abundantly endowed with water. The spring which feeds the stream surfacing below the church is one of many.A second joins this stream near the Fox inn,a third supplied a well below the floor of the Wheatsheaf inn,and in times of heavy rain others appear from under the roads in several parts of the village. The availability of water together with fertile soil explains the agricultural character of Broadwell from early times to present day.
