Take a walk along the old brickworks railway line.
It isn't there anymore, but evidence of its existance still is
easily seen in the forests near Yarralumbla.
The brickworks is one of the major features of Yarralumbla and in
1923 a narrow gauge (3'6") goods railway was constructed for the
transportation of bricks to some of the major construction sites in
central Canberra including Parliment House, Hotel Canberra and
Civic Centre. The railway was closed in 1929.
The brickworks, also known as the Old Canberra Brickworks, was the
first industrial manufacturing facility within the ACT. It supplied
building materials for many of the public construction projects in
Canberra, as well as residential buildings for the workers. Over
four million 'Canberra red' bricks were used in the construction of
Old Parliment House.
At the starting location you will find the coordinates and this
will lead you through the forest down to the railway
embankment.
